First of all, it takes a lot to survive. We are talking about water, food, and things of this nature. Additionally, you will need these things packed up using as little space as possible, and preventing too much weight. You should have a large waterproof duffel bag with everything inside you need to survive, that is to say you and anyone you are responsible for including your wife, and/or children. This means you need to organize your family’s regional calamity escape plan as I call it. As I said, weight is a big problem, so is space. If everything in our society and civilization turns to chaos, you might not have enough room in the trunk of your car to put all of your belongings, valuables, and those things that you can’t live without.
Shelters – the kind of shelter you bring is important. Tents, tarps, mosquito netting and coverings are just some kinds of shelters to consider. The number of people on your camping trip will determine the tent size which will affect the weight as well. How many kinds tents are out there? There are lots of variations and should be selected whether you’re backpacking in the Rockies or camping in the desert sands. If rain, ice or snow is in the forecast will determine the kind of shelter as well. You wouldn’t want to set up a hammock under the stars if rain was in the forecast? That wouldn’t be a good idea.
A few other considerations for gear include; a tarp for shade or to use as a floor protector for your tent. Change of clothes, motorcycle tool kit with multi-tool, tire plug kit and pump. Make yourself a three column check list, one for gear, one for short trips and one for long trips. This will help gather the correct gear to match the trip.
In most cases, you won’t need a fourth bag for your trip; however, it’s nice to have a waterproof duffel bag in your luggage arsenal just in case you need it. A lightweight waterproof duffel bag allows for use of almost the entire 50 pound weight allowance for whatever you’d like to bring. Be sure the waterproof duffel bag trends you select is sturdy and reinforced. It should ideally be able to fold up to a small size when not in use for easy transport or storage.

With your plan set in place and your respective family duties assigned, practice your escape route. This is especially important for young children who will get very confused and upset during an emergency. Make your children an active part of the plan so they feel as though they can play an important part in the family’s safety. With a bit of practice, everyone can get out of the house quickly and unharmed, with Jeffrey in tow.
